Wikipedia entering the search engine market
From macworld.com:
“The founder of Wikipedia, the user-edited online encyclopedia, is developing a Wiki-based search engine to compete with established commercial search engines from Google and Yahoo.”

This should make things interesting. Will it prove to be real competition? I have my doubts, I’ve read things about it using collective intelligence, having a base on Lucerne, and even SiteMaps… but as prone to error Google is - how in the world can the online community keep track, spider, and categorize everything fast enough?

OmniFind Yahoo Edition...Free
Yahoo jumps into fray with Google, and Rollyo with their own search solution for site owners. Partnered with IBM, and hosted on your server - it’s a decent, and FREE solution.
From iwr.co.uk:
“It took a few hours to index around 35,000 documents and build an index of almost 2.5 gigabytes. It works on specific file types, which means that some proprietary format files don’t get indexed. And there’s a size limit on the files it will index. I don’t know what it is, but the first file it baulked at was about 1 gigabyte. [Update: maximum file size is 51.2MB.]”

Wii to get Opera
From Gamespot.com:
“While much of the hoopla surrounding the Wii has so far involved arms flailing around with the new Wii Remote, the Wii is also taking Nintendo in other new directions. Downloadable old-school games, user-to-user messaging, and multimedia functions are intended to bring in the all-important nongaming crowd.”

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, the web is going beyond computers and onto electronic devices. I see a future when all phones, mobile and land-line, surf the web, cars are online, and fridges can send e-mail. Actually, that’s not the present - that’s now.
Let the browser wars continue.
Firefox security hole fixes released
From the Washington Post:
“Mozilla on Tuesday released updates to fix at least eight security vulnerabilities in its Firefox Web browser and related software. Five of the eight flaws received a “critical” label, meaning that an attacker could exploit them to break into machines running vulnerable versions of the software.”
